Description

Amid the hell of COVID-19, there was a small glimmer of hope in healthcare: Hospitals and health systems rapidly adopted telehealth. The technology that had held promise to transform care delivery for many years but failed to do so for many reasons suddenly rose to the occasion.

It seemed like telehealth’s moment in the spotlight had arrived – and then, adoption leveled off almost as quickly as it skyrocketed. Yes, use is significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels, but it’s a fraction of what it was – and what, in the minds of many, it still could be.

This eBook attempts to explain why provider-based telehealth, after literally saving the healthcare industry, has returned to its position as an unfortunate afterthought in the care delivery landscape. It begins with historical perspective to illustrate that telehealth’s roots (much like its present) are largely in episodic care, continues with an exploration of why the technology’s struggles have clouded provider and consumer perception of telehealth, and ends with a discussion of where and how telehealth could expand — with a nod to volume and value — if industry stakeholders get on board.
